Overview

Lynker Corporation, in strategic partnership with Fisheries Immersed Science Hawaii (FISH) as the FLOAT – the “FISH” and “Lynker” Ocean Alliance Team Joint Venture, is seeking a skilled Aquaculture & Marine Fish/Shellfish Biologist to support the NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center’s Environmental and Fisheries Sciences (EFS) Division. This role focuses on maintaining life support systems, conducting marine fish and shellfish husbandry, producing live feeds, and supporting research experiments for sustainable aquaculture development and ecosystem-based fisheries management.

 

Employment in this role is contingent upon FLOAT being awarded the contract by NOAA.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Construct, maintain, and repair marine egg, larval, and adult fish/shellfish holding and culture systems, including recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), flow-through tank systems, and net-pens.

  • Perform daily husbandry activities, including cleaning/disinfecting tanks, incubators, and silos; maintaining nets and feed containers.

  • Produce and feed live feeds (rotifers, artemia, algae) for larvae and formulated diets for adults.

  • Collect biological and environmental data during spawning/rearing, including tagging, growth assessments, and physical/chemical system parameters.

  • Maintain accurate records in NOAA-specified formats (Excel, tablets, or web interfaces).

  • Provide monthly logbooks and progress reports detailing system status, production, repairs, and mortality events exceeding acceptable quality levels (AQLs).

  • Ensure compliance with NOAA safety, security, and operational protocols.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology, zoology, environmental studies, aquaculture, or related field.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in rearing and maintaining fish and shellfish in culture systems.
  • Knowledge of aquaculture life support systems and basic water quality management.

Preferred:

  • Experience rearing live foods for marine fish and algae for shellfish.
  • Experience with fish/shellfish spawning, egg incubation, and larval rearing.
  • Skills in aquaculture plumbing systems installation and maintenance.

Work Environment

This position is on-site at NOAA’s Manchester Research Station with some work at NWFSC in Seattle. Work involves both indoor lab and outdoor culture environments in varying weather conditions. Occasional overtime or travel may be required to support research cruises, training, or fieldwork.
