Overview

Lynker, a Federal Government Contractor, is seeking to fill a full-time position supporting the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) at the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). Space Weather refers to variations in the space environment between the sun and Earth that can affect technologies in space and on Earth. Space weather is primarily driven by solar storm phenomena that include coronal mass ejections, solar flares, solar particle events and solar wind. These phenomena that are directed toward Earth are potential drivers of space weather events that can disrupt communications, satellite and airline operations, navigation and surveying systems, as well as electric power grids across large geographic regions on Earth. Space weather is a global issue and an understanding of solar storm phenomena is an important component to SWPC’s success at developing accurate space weather forecasts (event onset, location, duration, and magnitude).

The incumbent will support development, analysis, and evaluation of ionospheric datasets and modeling systems used in space weather operations. Responsibilities include scientific programming, integrating commercial and research datasets into operational workflows, and developing tools to assess data quality and suitability for forecasting products. This role requires strong analytical skills, proficiency in coding, and a working knowledge of geophysical data relevant to space weather impacts.

Responsibilities

The work will primarily include the following responsibilities:

  • Perform scientific programming for data integration, analysis, and model input preparation, including radio occultation and GNSS-based data sources.
  • Develop tools for data quality monitoring, statistical comparison, and model/data fusion.
  • Contribute to the design of forecast products and assist in validation efforts to assess utility of new data for operational use.
  • Optimize software and scripts for performance on NOAA’s NCEP computing infrastructure.
  • Document analysis methods and results; contribute to briefings and technical reports.

Qualifications

At least a Master’s Degree in Atmospheric Science, Space Science or other Geophysical Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related STEM field and at least 8 years of experience in related areas.

Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements:

  • Proficiency in scientific programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or Fortran.
  • Familiarity with atmospheric or space weather datasets, including satellite and ground-based observations.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • A passion for the National Weather Service mission.
  • Ability to accept assigned tasking, but also engage as a creative self-starter.
