Overview

Lynker Corporation, in strategic partnership with Fisheries Immersed Science Hawaii (FISH) as the FLOAT – the "FISH" and "Lynker" Ocean Alliance Team Joint Venture, is seeking motivated Acoustician to join interdisciplinary field teams on vessel-based research surveys for NOAA’s ProTech Fisheries 2.0 program. Employment in this role is contingent upon FLOAT being awarded the contract by NOAA.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain towed hydrophone arrays, sonobuoys, and passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) equipment on research vessels.
  • Detect, classify, and localize marine mammal sounds using PAMGuard or similar software.
  • Archive, back up, and summarize collected acoustic datasets daily; contribute to survey daily QA/QC and written reports.
  • Troubleshoot and repair acoustic hardware/software and maintain equipment logs and data archives.
  • Support deployment and retrieval of acoustic equipment as directed by Lead Acoustician or Survey Leader.
  • Report deviations from standard protocols and assist with process improvement.
  • Collaborate with visual observer teams, participate in daily safety and project briefings, and support project goals.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work extended durations at sea, including night or rotating shifts.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in marine biology, oceanography, engineering, bioacoustics, or related field.
  • Minimum 1 month cumulative experience operating field hydrophone arrays on large research vessels.
  • Demonstrated experience with PAMGuard or comparable acoustic software.
  • Proficiency in marine mammal acoustic signature identification and practical application of field data QA/QC methodologies.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware, experience with maintenance/repair of hydrophone arrays and acoustic gear.
  • Ability to work at sea for up to several months per deployment, pass pre-employment and pre-cruise medical screening, and complete security (background/fingerprint) checks as required by NOAA.
  • Strong data management, troubleshooting, and communication skills.

Preferred

  • Reference or endorsement from prior technical supervisor (team lead or Lead Acoustician).
  • Prior experience as a marine mammal acoustician on NOAA or similar research vessels.
  • Experience in cross-training or serving as marine mammal observer.
  • Experience in training/supporting junior team members on passive acoustic techniques.

Work Environment:

This position requires extensive time spent at sea, irregular work hours, and teamwork in challenging conditions. Flexibility with travel, ability to work in international waters, and readiness for short-notice deployment are expected.
