As part of our ongoing growth and expansion, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced GIS Specialist to support a contract with NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northwest Fisheries Science Center.  This is a full-time position and work will be conducted in a hybrid format, with about two days per week spent at Northwest Fisheries Science Center facilities at Montlake. Hiring for this position is contingent upon contract award. 

The NWFSC conducts leading-edge research and analyses that provide the foundation for management decisions to protect, recover, restore, and sustain ecosystems and living marine resources in the Pacific Northwest and California Current Large Marine Ecosystem. The NWFSC employs a diverse staff that includes scientific specialists as well the staff to support scientific operations.  New, publicly accessible tools are needed to support data driven decision-making.

Responsibilities

Duties for this position will include: 

  • Working with NWFSC staff to identify and prioritize NWFSC data and research products to be made available to NWFSC staff and the public. This may include providing copies of certificates for completion for required training, creating prioritized lists of datasets, databases and associated services to be delivered, and creating and managing datasets, databases, data and map services that comply with all NOAA/NMFS IT policies and procedures. 
  • Working with NWFSC staff to develop new decision support tools. These may include data visualizations and decision support tools, including web maps, web applications, story maps, dashboards, etc., authoring and/or supporting the development of written documentation, including metadata, SOPs, etc. for each dataset, service, and tool, creating and participating in demos and training for NWFSC personnel on each tool before it is made publicly available, working with NWFSC Communications Team to develop a communications plan for each tool.  
  • Working with NWFSC staff to collect and plan AUV missions at sea to add to habitat information. This will occur during one cruise on a NOAA vessel. 30 days at sea are anticpated. This may also include reviewing and understanding mission planning software used by NFFSC staff, planning missions and coordinating results with staff, and reading data collected for anaylsis and subsequent avaiblity to public. 

Qualifications

Requirements 

Minimum required qualifications include: 

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a focus in computer science, informatics, geography or related field. Outstanding GIS and programming credentials can be substituted for an academic degree.   
  • Experience in GIS including use of ArcGIS software 
  • Experience in R, Python, and SQL programming languages 
  • Experience in data management and database design 
  • Experience in using Tableau, Looker Studio, or other data visualization software 
  • Must be willing to travel to other NWFSC locations such as Newport, Oregon and to other science centers at the SWFSC in La Jolla, California. 
  • Must be willing to participate in research cruises on a NOAA vessel; 30 days at sea are anticpated.

Preferred qualifications include: 

  • Formal coursework in Database Design and Data Modeling, GIS, and Computer Programming 
  • Experience in developing tools for data driven decision making
