Overview

Lynker is seeking a Scientific Application Programmer - Workflow Development for Regional Applications, for a part-time position to support development, testing, configuration, and modernization of its tropical cyclone wind and storm surge watch/warning software applications. These applications are based on algorithms that use output from NHC’s Wind Speed Probability and Probabilistic Storm Surge Models run on the National Weather Service Weather and Climate Operational Supercomputing System (WCOSS).

Responsibilities

The Scientific Application Programmer - Workflow Development for Regional Applications, will help scope and develop requirements to transition the wind watch/warning software to the Hazard Services platform. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to support development efforts to transition the software to Hazard Services and support existing efforts to finalize transition of the storm surge watch/warning software to Hazard Services. The candidate will also assist with the annual configuration updates required of the applications.

These watch/warning applications use complex algorithm workflows driven by NHC’s Wind Speed Probability and Probabilistic Storm Surge Models. These models produce probabilistic guidance that serve as the basis for the algorithms to recommend the location and timing of wind and surge watches and warnings. The algorithms require annual calibration and their recommendations are subject to continuity constraints. The candidate may also be tasked to help with annual algorithm calibration and configuration updates.

Responsibilities of the Scientific Application Programmer - Workflow Development for Regional Applications, will include the following:

  • Perform annual configuration and calibration updates of both wind and surge watch/warning applications as needed.
  • Support the transition of the storm surge watch/warning application into Hazard Services.
  • Scope/develop requirements to fully transition the wind watch/warning application into Hazard Services.
  • Support the development and transition of the wind watch/warning application into Hazard Services.

Qualifications

The Ideal Qualifications of the Scientific Application Programmer - Workflow Development for Regional Applications, include the following:

  • Technical background and knowledge of the Hazard Services application and the National Weather Service and NHC Watch Warning program and processes. The candidate needs to have proven experience in these areas.
  • Proficiency in the Python and Unix Shell scripting languages
  • Experience in collaborative software development and source code management using version control systems, such as Git and GitHub
  • Knowledge of software development life cycle and methods, such as Agile and continuous integration / continuous delivery (CI/CD)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex software systems
