We are seeking an experienced fieldwork coordinator to join our team at the Auke Creek weir and field station for the summer season with the potential to continue through the winter.

Responsibilities

Task 1: Serve as senior coordinator for fieldwork performing the following duties: 

  1. Coordinate and assist in fish collection, sampling, coded wire tagging, and spawning activities  
  2. Coordinate and assist in salmon scale collection, preservation, and digitization 
  3. Coordinate and assist with fish husbandry work including maintenance of equipment  
  4. Coordinate and assist in daily environmental data collection 
  5. Record any deviation from scientific protocols provided by Federal POC 

Deliverables: 

  1. Enter fish abundance data to spreadsheet within 1 week of fish passage 
  2. Enter fish weight and length data to spreadsheet within 1 week of sampling 
  3. Enter any fish spawning/husbandry data within 1 week of completion 
  4. Enter environmental data to spreadsheet within 1 week of collection 
  5. Documentation of any deviation from scientific protocols supplied by the Federal POC for each project; due immediately to Federal POC after observation. 
  6. Monthly progress report to include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following: accomplishments, issues encountered, travel (including purpose, significant outcomes, action items), and recommendations, if applicable 

 

Task 2: Coordinate and participate in all staging and de-staging of fieldwork, including: 

  1. Coordinate and participate in the installation, conversion, and removal of NOAA’s research salmon weirs on Auke Creek and Sashin Creek over the course of the work season.  
  2. Coordinate and participate in maintenance required for the safe, daily operation of NOAA’s research salmon weirs on Auke Creek and Sashin Creek. 

Deliverables: 

  1. Documentation of all items, including place of storage of items, staged and de-staged for field activities at research stations within 2 days of activity completion. For each activity a list of items needed for the research project will be provided. 
  2. Documentation of any observed safety issues or injuries noted; due immediately to Federal POC after observation. 
  3. Monthly progress report to include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following: accomplishments, issues encountered, travel (including purpose, significant outcomes, action items), and recommendations, if applicable 

 

Task 3: Provide data analysis and summarization, including:  

  1. Shall assist in data entry into spreadsheets and databases, analysis of data using R statistical package, and literature review. 
  2. Shall assist in the preparation of reports and manuscripts related to climate change on, genetics, growth, condition, migration, and survival of salmonids and other commercially important species.   
  3. Provide a written report on all data collected, all data entry and analyses, and locations of data files.  

Deliverables 

  1. Weekly oral update to project POC regarding progress or issues with data entry, analysis, or report/manuscript/SOP preparation. 
  2. Prepare and/or edit draft reports(e.g. State of Alaska permitting report, NOAA Technical Memoranda) within 1 month of assignment 
  3. At the end of the field season provide a written report on all data collected, all data entry and analyses, and locations of data files. The final report is due no later than one month following NMFS’ comments on the draft. 
  4. Monthly progress report to include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following: accomplishments, issues encountered, travel (including purpose, significant outcomes, action items), and recommendations, if applicable 

Qualifications

 

You must have a Bachelor's degree, or higher, from an accredited college or university with a major directly related in a field of study as related to the requirements of specific task order with emphasis in fisheries, aquaculture, genetics, biology, natural science, or mathematics, plus three (3) years of experience in related field or combination of such totaling seven (7) years combined education and experience. A higher education Degree in science may be substituted for experience. 

 

You must have experience in: 

  • Salmon husbandry techniques 
  • Using R (ARCS only) statistical packages 
  • Entering data into databases 
  • Working in remote Alaska areas 
  • Working for extended hours in adverse environmental conditions 
  • Working on or operating powered small boats in Alaska waters 
  • Safely operating power tools necessary for fieldwork 
  • Due to the physical nature of fieldwork, you must be able to lift and move items up to 20kg without assistance
