Lynker seeks a candidate with geospatial, statistical/machine learning, and hydrologic modeling expertise to support the calibration and regionalization efforts for the NOAA Office of Water Prediction’s National Water Model. The National Water Model is a continental-scale modeling framework of hydrologic processes to help protect lives and property. This position may assist in 1) generating geospatial datasets to inform machine learning models, 2) calibrating and regionalizing parameters from hydrologic models, and 3) contributing to machine-learning based hydrologic modelling. The ideal candidate possesses a familiarity with developing scientific software tooling, wrangling publicly-available hydrologic datasets, and has experience in hydrologic modelling and/or earth sciences. 

Responsibilities

  • Perform calibration, validation, and statistical evaluation of hydrologic models
  • Evaluate process-based and machine-learning based hydrologic models
  • Providing feedback on documentation, functionality, and optimization tools of hydrologic models and scientific workflows
  • Develop and maintain version-controlled, community-oriented software tools for hydrologic models and the interpretation and evaluation of their performance and functionality
  • Analyze and visualize hydrometeorological and geospatial data using Python, R, or other open-source programming languages
  • Conduct Quality Assurance and Quality Control on scientific workflows and data processing scripts, including machine learning algorithms
  • Technical report preparation and documentation
  • Fulfilling other duties as assigned

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • BS, MS or PhD in Earth Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or related disciplines
  • 5+ years of experience in water resources or related physical science
  • Scientific software development experience in Python and R, or other open-source programming languages

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in machine learning and/or statistical methods
  • Experience developing automated geospatial processing and analysis workflows
  • Experience accessing and analyzing publicly-available hydrologically-relevant datasets
  • Experience in hydrological modeling, process representation, and analysis
  • Experience in model calibration and/or search space optimization
  • Experience with automated hydrologic modeling workflows
