Overview

Lynker is seeking a sharp support scientist for modeling and observational studies designed to improve our understanding of seasonal to interannual to multidecadal ocean variability and its interactions with atmospheric processes.  The support scientist’s work will involve furthering the capability for an oceanic hazards outlook containing delineations of where winds and waves are expected to have the potential of posing a hazard to either life or property for vessels at sea.  This work will enhance total marine weather services to the private sector, the general public and for global oceans ultimately advancing America's blue economy.

Responsibilities

The duties of the Support Scientist for Ocean Prediction - Modeling and Observational Studies will include the following:

  • The support scientist will perform the job duties in an independent and collaborative way, applying innovative methods for the primary work initiatives.
  • The support scientist will collaborate with others, including scientists at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) and the NOAA National Weather Service (NWS), to work with wave re-forecasts and reanalyzes using results from current operational and future experimental versions of Global Ensemble Forecast Systems, determining skill for wind and wave forecasts focused in the week two time period.
  • The support scientist will direct (estimated twice weekly) operational runs of Python scripts that generate hazards outlook and probability maps.  These runs will include bias correction and post-processing methods.
  • The support scientist will adjust scripts, perform code maintenance, and make modifications to products based on customer (internal and/or external) requests.  Occasional coordination with forecasters and marine scientists will be required.

Qualifications

The Support Scientist for Ocean Prediction - Modeling and Observational Studies should have the following:

  • Command of theoretical knowledge of weather, physical or coastal oceanography with a degree in meteorology, physical oceanography, physics, coastal engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in running numerical models on High Performing Computer (HPC) platforms using MPI, OpenMP, Slurm, LSF, etc.
  • Is familiar with modern software development practices, particularly version control software.
  • Advanced skills and knowledge of modern programming languages and object-oriented languages, such as FORTRAN90 and Python.
