As part of our ongoing growth and expansion, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced part-time (up to 19.5 hours per week) Heritage Preserve Field Crew Ranger to join our team and help land stewardship efforts in the Ka‘u District, Hawai‘i Island. Specific locations include: Honuapo – Hokukano - Kaalaiki; Kaunamano; Kawala; Kahilipali Nui; Kahilipali Iki (Waikapuna); Waiohinu (Kamilo); Kiolakaa – Waiomao (Ka’alu’alu Bay); and Kawela – Kamaoa (Ka Lae). This position will report day-to-day to the Ala Kahakai Trail Association. The candidate must be located on Hawai‘i Island and must be authorized to work in the US.

Responsibilities

Main responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:

 

1 - Performing routine site maintenance,
General maintenance, cleaning, and servicing of ATA vehicles including UTV
Trail clearing and Road maintenance
2 - Conservation duties and monitoring
Monitor shoreline for marine debris, marine mammals, and sea turtles
Monitor tidepools and anchialine pools
Check waterlines and troughs
Monitor native plant habitats and seabird colonies
3 - Facilitating the volunteer stewardship program
Assist with monthly community volunteer days
Secure equipment and supplies
Provide guidance during volunteer projects
Maintain a safe environment and safe practices
4 - Assisting with community educational access,

5 - Managing public health and safety,
Engage with visitors, fishermen, and recreational users
Inspect roadways, shorelines, and camp areas
Provide notices and warnings during extreme weather and high surf
Assist with wildfire prevention
6 - General resource monitoring and security.
Patrol property on foot and using ATA vehicles including UTV
Monitor native plant habitats and cultural sites
Collect data on target species as part of recovery efforts
Inspect fencing and access points
Notify management regarding any unauthorized activity
Provide daily and weekly reports

 


Working Conditions
This position involves working outdoors on Hawai‘i Island, including but not limited to variable weather conditions, at remote outdoor locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, in coastal and marine environments, and under physically demanding circumstances that may require physical exertion and/or muscular strain.

Qualifications

The Heritage Preserve Field Crew Ranger is expected to possess the necessary knowledge and skills to manage day-to-day activities. The minimum required qualifications for this position include:
Relevant experience in the lands and people of Ka‘u.
At least 3 years of experience working with communities in Hawaii and collaborating between networks, including knowledge of Hawaiian ecosystems and aloha ‘aina values.


Preferred Qualifications
CPR/First Aid certified

About Ala Kahakai Trail Association

The Ala Kahakai Trail Association is a non-profit organization that provides community assistance for trail management and planning. ATA was created in 2006 and became a registered non-profit organization in 2008. ATA helps ensure that the Hawaiʻi Island trail system, in particular those trails within the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail Corridor, is well-connected to the community and that Hawaiian values and principles are in place and practiced. We work to foster various kinds of partnerships and help guide the work of managing and sustaining the trail with consideration for the vision and goals of the diverse communities that the trails connect.
