Overview

Lynker Corporation is a leading provider of innovative solutions in weather and climate science. With a commitment to excellence and a passion for innovation, Lynker leverages cutting-edge technologies and scientific expertise to support the creation and delivery of improved operational weather forecasts.

Lynker is seeking a skilled Hydrography and Prey Flux Modeler to support NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center to analyze and report on the modeling of hydrography and prey flux for select tidal freshwater regions of the Columbia River. This position will focus on employing modeling techniques to expand and compare prey fluxes among differing hydrogeomorphic regimes. The goal is to understand the spatial impact of tidal wetlands on juvenile salmon growth and condition, contributing to life cycle modeling and restoration planning.

Responsibilities

  1. Data Processing, Analysis, and Management:
    • Apply analytical approaches to previously collected ADCP datasets from four tidal creeks in the lower Columbia River to clarify tidal monthly and seasonal variations of velocity and discharge.
    • Identify and characterize the dominant mechanisms contributing to fluxes in and out of the creeks.
    • Compare and contrast the tidal and fluvial characteristics of creeks draining emergent marsh and forested wetland habitats.
    • Maintain detailed records of all data and code, following protocols developed in coordination with NMFS project leaders.
  2. Model Development:
    • Develop a biophysical model framework to investigate the spatial variation of wetland hydrography and flux in selected hydrogeomorphic river reaches of the Lower Columbia River.
    • Provide prey flux output metrics for life cycle models (LCM) and advise on experimental design to field-test flux and LCM model assumptions and output.
    • Expand the model framework to estuarine deltaic environments and standardize output metrics in collaboration with LCM teams.
  3. Communication and Coordination:
    • Communicate progress informally with project leaders on a weekly basis.
    • Contribute to manuscript preparation for publication in peer-reviewed journals, including analysis, figures, and writing Methods, Results, and Discussion sections.
    • Assist with presentations and reporting results at scientific meetings.
    • Produce monthly progress reports summarizing accomplishments, issues, travel, and recommendations.

Qualifications

  • A PhD in environmental science, hydrology, ecology, or a related field. A Master’s degree may be used to substitute for 5 years of experience.
  • Experience analyzing hydrographic datasets.
  • Familiarity with 1D and 2D numerical modeling of non-stationary tidal dynamics
  • Familiarity with transport (flux) models.
  • Experience writing and publishing peer-reviewed articles.
  • Experience in manuscript preparation and scientific communication.
