Overview

Lynker is seeking a Lead Physical Scientist to lead Lynker scientist personnel to support the NCEP Environmental Modeling Center for the development of physics parameterizations and dynamics options within the Unified Forecast System for simulation domains spanning regional to global and simulation lengths spanning days to seasons. NCEP/EMC also develops other modeling systems outside of the UFS framework to complete EMC's mission.

Responsibilities

Duties of the Lead Scientist for Physics and Dynamics Development will include following:

  • Work, lead and potentially supervise other physics and dynamics developers to improve various physics suites and dynamics options for different UFS applications
  • Develop the Rapid Refresh Forecast System (RRFS) ensemble prediction system focusing on physics parameterization, ensemble perturbation and dynamics testing and evaluation.
  • Conduct essential research-to-operation investigation to enable continuous development of the coupled UFS with emerging scientific ideas and techniques for improving the UFS performance in applications of various spatial and temporal scales, from short-range weather to subseasonal-to-seasonal climate variability
  • Interact with the UFS community to make research-to-operation transition for new physical parameterizations that are both innovative and effective to improve the operational performance of the coupled UFS

Qualifications

The Lead Scientist selected for UFS Physics and Dynamics Development should meet the following qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of atmospheric physics processes and the associated parameterization techniques.
  • Advanced skills and knowledge of modern programming languages, such as FORTRAN90 and Python.
  • Skills and knowledge of High Performing Computing on various platforms using MPI, OpenMP, Slurm, LSF, etc.
  • Knowledge of modern software development practices and version control software, in particular Git/GitHub/Gitflow.
  • Knowledge of earth system modeling and ensemble modeling framework
  • Experience working in a UNIX environment with shell scripting languages
  • Ability to perform complex work in a fast-paced environment


The Ideal Lead Physical Scientist for United Forecast System - Physics and Dynamics Development, will have the following:

  • Experience in Project Management.
  • Experience with the Common Community Physics Package and the UFS applications.
  • Experience with the development of physics parameterizations.
  • Experience with the development of earth system models.
  • Experience in model testing and evaluation and/or knowledge of verification principles.
