As part of our ongoing growth and expansion, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced Physical Scientist for Coupled JEDI and Data Assimilation, to support the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) in carrying out research and development work related to the future operational coupled Unified Forecast System (UFS).

 

The work of the Physical Scientist selected will include the management of the coupled data assimilation (DA) task, as well as the development and implementation of several components of the data assimilation system within the framework of coupled assimilation and modeling. The ideal candidate will possess advanced computational and programming skills to enhance the performance of the JEDI-based DA system. Additionally, the candidate should be able to lead, assist, and guide team members to implement, test, evaluate, and develop these components effectively.

Responsibilities

Duties of the Physical Scientist for Coupled JEDI and Data Assimilation will include the following:

The candidate will perform their job duties to a high standard, working both independently and collaboratively. They will assist in managing projects and in developing and applying innovative methods within the primary work areas outlined below. The candidate will collaborate with EMC scientists and external partners to calibrate, optimize, and evaluate the JEDI-based coupled data assimilation systems of the UFS. The primary focus will be on optimizing and calibrating the coupled JEDI system, including development of component applications (such as marine), algorithm enhancements, and background error development and optimization.

 

The successful Physical Scientist will work on the following scientific and engineering tasks:

  • Advance the development of the JEDI based global data assimilation systems
  • Design, develop and maintain DA algorithms relevant to coupled DA
  • Design, develop, and maintain background error for coupled DA
  • Provide guidance in modern software design and development best practices.
  • System Optimization for High-Performance Computing (HPC).
  • Collaborate with multiple teams in an Agile-style development environment.
  • Support and further develop the UFS' subsystems and their communication among the model and data assimilation components.

 

Qualifications

 

The Ideal Physical Scientist for Coupled JEDI and Data Assimilation will have the following:

  • - A Master's Degree or higher in geophysical science, mathematics, physics or related physical science with at least 7 years of experience in coupled forecast and data assimilation systems.

- Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities in at least five of the following areas:

  • Expert knowledge of the physical and mathematical basis of geophysical data assimilation
  • Expert knowledge of coupled data assimilation
  • Advanced knowledge of sea ice and/or land DA
  • Expert knowledge of C++ and object oriented programming Finish
  • Expert knowledge of computational geometry development on HPC
  • Modern software engineering practices (requirements gathering, design, prototyping, version control, integration, testing, and documentation)
  • Experience in model testing and evaluation and/or knowledge of verification principles
  • Ability to lead a team environment on complex problems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated skill in performing tasks requiring organization and attention to detail
